BANSURI, PULLANGUZHAL OR VENU - Indian Bamboo Flutes Found all over India, the bansuri and venu (pullanguzhal) are common Indian bamboo flutes (murali). The flutes comes in two types, the 'fipple' and the 'transverse'. The transverse variety, which is simple in construction is made from a short length of bamboo or reed with holes cut at precise distances for the whole and half notes. This type of flute is used for classical and religious music. The
bansuri with six or seven holes is typically found in the northern states
and is a favourite of classical and folk music. The venu
(pullanguzhal) with up to eight holes is a South Indian instrument and
used with carnatic music. |
