CHENDA - Percussion instrument Like the kuzhal, the chenda is found generally in the southern states of India (particularly Kerala). The chenda is cylindrical in shape and struck with two sticks on one side of the drum. As can be seen in the picture, it is suspended over the shoulder with a strap and played at hip level. The chenda is played in groups. It is used to accompany the music for the famous kathakali and koodiyattam dance forms. Made from wood, it is covered at both ends with hide (cow) and tensioned with rawhide strings. The chenda (group) can render a pretty deafening sound and is used in religious processions. |
