Dhoti (Indian Male Dress) The dhoti is a traditional men's wear in India and goes by several similar names depending on the region. Like the kurta (punjabi), it is considered formal wear. Essentially, a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, ranging from four to six metres in length, the dhoti is wrapped around the waist and legs and knotted at the waist. It is worn with a an ordinary shirt or traditionally with the kurta in North India or with an 'angavastram' (unstitched cloth draped loosely over the shoulders) in the southern states Being the common man's dress, and made from cotton, the dhoti is available everywhere at most reasonable rates. Equally, it being considered formal wear, designer apparel (dhotis) are sold at boutiques at astronomical prices. It is also the mandatory dress for traditional ceremonies in the southern states. As is the case all over the world, the shirt and trousers is slowly taking over as the preferred style for clothing making the wearing of the dhoti a home wear or reserved for ceremonial occasions.
