KUZHAL - Wind Reed instrument Found generally in the southern states of India (particularly Kerala), the kuzhal is a double reed wind instrument. It renders a shrill, sharply penetrating tone. It can be used either for solo performances (kuzhal pattu) or more commonly as an accompaniment with a pivotal role. The kuzhal is made of wood with a cone shaped length and fitted with a brass bell at the end. Traditionally played by males only, the musicians blow through the double reeds while closing the holes with fingers of both hands. |
