MIZHAVU - Percussion Instrument Made of copper and covered by hide, the mizhavu (mizhav) is the main accompanying musical instrument associated with temple music in Kerala a southern state in India. The drum is pot shaped and crafted from copper plates. Most of the musicians specializing in the playing of this instrument come from the Nambiar community especially if it is being played in the temples. The skin is struck with both hands to produce mesmerizing beats and rhythms. Sticks are never used. This big copper drum is used to accompany the ritualistic group performing arts of Koothu and Koodiyattam. The peculiarity of this instrument is that it is considered sacred and used only for religious performances inside the temples. The drum is conferred upon the same rituals as for its Brahmin (upper/priestly caste) musician. |
