No matter what your preference, you will find a food outlet in Mumbai that suits your palate and your pocket equally.  Fast-food eateries, road-side stalls, cosy & homely cafes and multi-cuisine glitzy restaurants dot the city.

With a large number of citizens maintaining a strictly vegetarian diet, all restaurants offer a variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare and many are exclusively vegetarian.  Restaurant food tends to be oily but there are a growing number of establishments with a menu for the health conscious.

Road-side Stalls: Found in the vicinity of schools, colleges, office blocks and market places, these side-walk eateries are the mainstay of both the mind-boggling numbers of daily migrants as well as residents of the city.  There cannot be any corner without a vendor or two churning out servings of 'dahi puri', 'bhel puri' and 'ragda patties' or the humble 'vada pao' to several customers simultaneously. Chicken and mutton are marinated in secret spices and cooked over coal fires and the aroma will draw customers from a good distance away.  'Chinese' food stalls are found everywhere and the menu consists mainly of main courses with a noodles base and the original Chinese sauces customised over the years to the Indian palate.  While the fare is mouth-watering and the portions generous, the foreign visitor is advised to 'wean' himself or herself slowly before making this option a daily choice.  This is because of the hygiene (or the lack of it) of the cooking conditions and service.  Many of these stalls have errand boys to deliver what is endearingly called a 'parcel' to your hotel room and in this way, you can enjoy the food using your own cutlery and crockery.

There are numerous restaurants all over the city that serve menus from starters to desserts, authentic to specific parts of India.  An International menu such as Thai or Japanese cuisine is served by many restaurants.  European, (British and Italian) food is served by most of the better restaurants. Just how good they are, becomes common knowledge only by word of mouth.  The proof of the pudding is in the eating could not have a more literal meaning as no amount of advertising will convince the Mumbai 'Eating Out' enthusiast.  So, if there is some part of India that you will not be visiting but would like to sample the food from there, you can do so by taking the advice of your local host and dining out at the outlet he/she recommends.

Many of the restaurants in Mumbai have a licensed bar and both Indian and foreign liquor is available up to the restaurant's closing time.

There are several international fast-food chains such as McDonald's and Pizza Hut.  Home delivery of items ordered over the phone is common place.  Some of these restaurants conduct theme private parties for children, like birthday celebrations.
