RAVANHASTA - Stringed instrument The ravanhasta (ravanastum or ravanastron) is a musical instrument found in almost all parts of India but is used predominately in the state of Rajasthan. As can be seen from the image, it has a very simple design and construction. The resonating body is made from an empty coconut shell covered with a skin membrane. A length of bamboo forms the neck. At intervals on this neck are fixed tuning pegs from which the attached strings go to the resonating box over a bridge. The ravanahasta is played with a bow made of horsehair which at times is fitted with small brass bells. |
