SARANGI - Stringed instrument
This musical instrument has been in use for ages and is the most popular of the bowed instruments in India. Just like the sitar, it is used for both vocals accompaniment and solo performances.
What is peculiar of this instrument is that its notes and tone closely resemble the human voice.
Like the Esraj, its resonant section is made of wood with a goatskin stretched over. Here there are three main strings and between thirty and forty sympathetic strings.
A heavy bow is used while fingering the main strings with the left hand.
