URUMEE - Percussion  Instrument

The Urumee is a Tamil Nadu (South Indian) drum, generally made from the wood of the jackfruit tree.  This hour glass shaped drum has a hide skin attached to both ends.  The right hand skin may be made from lizard skin but most often it is of cow hide.

There are seven or eight holes bored into the outer circumference of each edge of the drum.  The two drum heads are kept together and tensioned by a tightly lashed continuous rope woven in a 'Vee' pattern.  There are additional coils of rope or metal tied to each pair nearer the left end and these are used for tension fine tuning.

The drum is strapped and slung over the shoulder and aligned horizontally enabling the musicians to strike the skins with both hands (by sticks).

Peculiarities:  This drum can make up to five basic tones.  They are -

  • Clean or open - striking the right head.

  • Deep resonating - striking the right head while rubbing the left head with the edge of the long curved stick.

  • A talking sound - achieved by striking the right head while squeezing and releasing the ropes with the left hand.

  • Two 'Closed' (no pitch) - striking and muting with either stick
